Application of LCD Display in Field Exploration

10.31.2023

1. Requirements for LCD in field exploration applications

Field exploration work is complex and has certain risks. The operation needs to deal with various environments such as hills, mountains, and plateaus; it also includes exploration of rocks, strata, structures, minerals, hydrology, landforms, etc., so the operating environment is relatively harsh. In the process of operation, whether the tools used are convenient, stable and reliable can largely determine whether the exploration personnel can successfully complete the work.

Liquid crystal display, as the interface of human-computer interaction, is a device exposed to the use environment. Therefore, the LCD needs to face the high temperature, high humidity, severe cold, high brightness and various collisions and vibrations during the exploration process for a long time, and maintain normal working conditions.

2. LCD suitable for field exploration applications

After understanding the environment of field exploration operations, according to the specific display plan requirements:

① High-resolution true color: On the screen, it supports 16 million color true color graphic display, which can truly show the color of the displayed content. The high resolution of 1024x600 pixels is comparable to that of ordinary small computers, and reflects the details of all data finely. Allow users to see exploration data more clearly and intuitively.

② Flexible and standard interface: In terms of interface, it supports wide voltage power supply of 11~26V, so that the design has more choices. The standard HDMI multimedia signal interface supports lossless signal transmission, especially in high-definition display.

③ High-precision capacitive touch screen: The LCD screen produced by our company is equipped with a capacitive touch screen that supports multi-touch. According to the use environment of the final product, we can debug the driver of the touch screen together with the customer to adapt to different working environments such as humidity, touch with a cover or with gloves to achieve the best touch effect.

④ Reliable and easy-to-read LCD screen: The outdoor working environment has high requirements on the reliability of the LCD screen. Those suitable for field use have undergone a series of rigorous tests: reliable ESD test, long-term lighting test, temperature and humidity test, and also simulate the environment of geological exploration operations, and do temperature shock test to ensure that the LCD reaches the industrial level. Stable operation in the range of -20℃~70℃. Outdoor use requires the display to be sunlight readable. The general practice is to increase the brightness of the backlight to compete with ambient light. The sequelae of strengthening the backlight are that the power consumption increases, the heat increases, and the life of the backlight is shortened. These are very unfriendly to battery-operated handheld devices. Our company has rich experience in designing and manufacturing LCDs that are readable in sunlight. Our design engineers reduce the reflected light of the LCD screen through various methods. We recommend customers to use a dark display background to improve the display contrast, and then achieve sunlight readable.

3. Application examples of portable prospecting equipment

Our application in geological exploration has been tested by the market and has formed a certain scale. For example, various exploration equipment derived from geological exploration and geological mapping. For example, European customers use 10.1-inch TFT LCD in portable prospecting equipment.

- Seamless integration of geographic data and captured prospecting data;

- Identification of structures, lithology, contacts and traces to be recorded;

- Sample records of points and lines; record ore grade estimates;

- Real-time positioning of stereoscopic network information.

The client used a lot of black and gray backgrounds when designing the interface, and installed black anti-collision strips around the windows, which not only protected the screen but also increased the overall contrast of the display, making it highly readable in various environments. In actual use, the geological engineer responds well to the use of the equipment, the capacitive touch screen is easy to operate, the display is clear, and the portability is very good. With the deepening of geological research, the requirements of exploration equipment on LCD screens have gradually become stricter, forcing me to constantly upgrade and iterate products. We are also working in this direction, hoping to help our customers bring revolutionary mapping equipment to geologists and engineers.
